Report from TERRY NEWSOME.
Jantex Gamma 1st and 2nd at The Fullers King of the Harbour Ocean race
The second international Surf ski race of the year was held in Auckland, New Zealand on 23 January. Ideal conditions greeted ski paddlers for the 2010 Fullers King of the Harbour, from the Viaduct Harbour to Waiheke Island - Auckland.
Sixty of New Zealand's top paddlers were treated to runners from the start created by the south westerly blow, which grew to large breaking swells on which they raced along at speeds over 20km/hr at times as they passed Rangitoto Island.
After time away from paddling, Olympian Mike Walker returned in top form to take another King of the Harbour crown. Mike reached the finish at Matiatia Wharf covering the 22kms in 1:29:50 at an average speed of 16.69 k/hr. Hot on Mike’s heels was Paul Wiford who claimed second place in 1:31:05.
Both Mike and Paul use a Jantex Gamma Medium plus.
