JUNIOR AND U23 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP - MONTEMOR 2021
Canoe Sprint returned to Portugal after the memorable 2018 World Championship. Montemor is home of the portuguese sprint team and it didn't disappoint. The weather was great, wind was managable and a thousand athletes were racing in a great athmosphere. The public was technically out, but found a way to watch the races from outside.
One of the most successully athletes in Montemor was Sara Fojt. She dominated the Junior K1 and K2 500 just like she dominated the Europeans in Poznan a couple of months ago, positioning herself like one of the most talented and promissing sprinters of her generation. K2 500 also gave Katarina Pecsukova a Bronze Medal after the 4th place in the K1 500.
In the U23 K2, Silver Medal for Katinka Hoffman and Bronze for Veranika Leaniuk and Maryia Kavalenka.
Montemor would also confirm the danish young talent Thorbjorn Rask. He won the K1 1000 and the K1 500 in the Europeans and came to the Worlds with the same goal. In the end he left Portugal with two Silver Medals that look great on his international curriculum.
Jan Graf from Germany also took his medal home. A very tasteful Bronze in the Junior K1 1000.
The 200 meters are no longer on the Olympic program, but they don't care, they just like the speed: Jakub Stepun added the World title to the European in a very impressive fashion: 34.72 seconds is not for the ordinary sprinter. Matus Jedinak finished third in, again, one more brilliant performance. The home star, Pedro Casinha, face of the Championship, didn't shake and put on yet a super fast race claiming the Gold and the World title. Daniil Platash finished second.
Also fast is the K4. What to say about the win of Dmytro Danylenko, Vitalii Bystrevskyi, Vasyl Smilka, Oleksandr Zaitsev in tyhe K4 500. For sure, a promising future for them and for Ukraine in this event. In second, consolidating their position in the big boat, the polish crew of Jakub Michalski, Wojciech Tracz, Bartosz Grabobski.
Making their way into the world stage is Beatriz Fernandes. A great perfomance in the C1 500 gave her the Silver and the first ever Medal in Sprint Canoe Women for Portugal.
